At Emmanuel House Formation Center in Nairobi, Kenya — a mission of the Assumptionists — theology is not only studied, it is lived. Here, religious brothers are formed spiritually and practically, including through hands-on work in agriculture.
One of the key leaders in this mission is Brother Paluku Katimenge Charles, a second-year theology student from the Democratic Republic of Congo. With a background in community development and project management, Br. Charles has taken on the responsibility of managing the poultry and garden at the formation house.
When he first arrived, the poultry consisted of only a few chickens. Recognizing the potential for growth and sustainability, he began transforming it into a productive and eco-friendly system. The poultry now includes local breeds and improved hybrids, raised without the use of harmful chemicals — ensuring the production of natural, organic meat and eggs for the community.
The garden is also thriving, producing a variety of vegetables such as amaranth, sukuma (collard greens), onions, cassava leaves, and bananas. Seeds are shared by brothers from different parts of Africa — including Congo, Madagascar, and West Africa — creating a garden that reflects the cultural diversity of the formation house. Manure from the chickens is used as organic fertilizer, closing the loop and strengthening the connection between the poultry and the garden.
This integrated farm not only provides healthy food for the brothers but also supports the formation goals of Emmanuel House. It teaches self-reliance, environmental stewardship, and community responsibility, which are all central to the Assumptionist mission.
However, challenges remain. The current chicken shelter is old and in disrepair, and there is a growing need to expand both the poultry and garden to serve more people — both within and beyond the community.
This initiative stands as a beautiful example of how theology, sustainability, and practical service can come together to form future leaders who are grounded in faith and committed to the world.
