Father Barry’s journey with the Assumptionists began in 1963 at Assumption College, where a formative education and community life inspired him to join the congregation. After many years of teaching, he felt called to something entirely different—serving in the far north of Canada.
Since 2017, Father Barry has ministered in Nunavut, first in Igloolik and Sanirajak, and now in Iqaluit, the capital. Life here is a world away from the classroom: long winters, remote landscapes, and communities facing real challenges. Yet, he describes the Inuit as remarkably tough and deeply good-hearted.
His mission is simple but profound—being present, building trust, and sharing in both the struggles and joys of the people. “This work is possible because of the generosity of Assumptionist donors,” he says. “I’m grateful for the chance to serve and hope to continue as long as I have the strength.”
From campus life to the Arctic, Father Barry’s path reflects the Assumptionist call to go where the need is greatest, serving with faith and compassion.
