Passing of Fr. Norman Meiklejohn A.A.

It is with great sadness that I inform the Assumption community of the death of Fr. Norman Meiklejohn, A.A., AP’46, AU’50. Fr. Norman’s apostolic work at Assumption University, then Assumption College, included assignments as Dean of Students, Director of the Evening College, Professor in the History Department, and Trustee.

For eight years, he conducted research as a Maryknoll Priest Associate in Peru, and from 1986-1999 he served as the chaplain to the diplomatic community in Moscow, the last of a seventy-five-year line of American Assumptionists in that assignment.

During his later years, Fr. Norman was active on campus as a participant in theatre productions and a mainstay in the WISE program. He was also a docent in the Russian Icon Museum in Clinton.

Fr. Norman, a native of Somersworth, NH, was an alumnus of Assumption Preparatory School and Assumption College. Ordained in 1954, he received his formation as an Assumptionist in Quebec and in Rome. After completing a Licentiate in Sacred Theology at the Angelicum in Rome, Fr. Norman pursued further studies at Georgetown and at Columbia University, where he received his Ph.D. in Latin American Studies.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Fr. Norman on Friday, March 10 at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit.
An hour of visitation will precede the Mass beginning at 9:00 am.
Burial will follow at St. Anne’s Cemetery in Sturbridge.

We extend our prayers and heartfelt condolences to his family and his Assumptionist brothers. As a community of faith, we pray that Fr. Norman now dwells in the loving presence of God.
