New Teachers Visit the Assumptionist Center

On Friday night, our community at the Assumptionist Center was joined by Andrew Buck, one of our current residents, and over a dozen of his colleagues in the Saint Thomas More Teaching Fellowship. This fellowship, run through the Archdiocese of Boston, places young practicing Catholics as teachers in Catholic schools throughout the Archdiocese. It is open to both those who have a background in teaching. and those with no experience in the classroom. It provides an opportunity to introduce the vocation of Catholic Education to those who may have never considered such a path in life. To this end, the Fellowship includes a summer training program that covers everything from the nitty-gritty details of lesson planning and classroom management to the theory and purpose of Catholic Education. The Fellowship then lasts for two years, during which there are regular community and spiritual formation events, such as retreats, monthly dinners, and liturgies. After the Fellowship, fellows may continue teaching at the school where they’ve been employed.

The fellows themselves hail from across the country — from anywhere from Texas to California, and from Florida to Washington. Many of the fellows have never been to Boston before! During their summer training, the fellows live at Bentley University and take classes at Pope St. John XXIII Seminary in Weston. Andrew, through a resident of the Assumptionist Center, is living there for the summer with his colleagues. He invited them to join us so that more could witness the Assumptionist Charism, and get to know the broader faith community here in Boston. Our guests joined us for Evening Prayer, our Weekly Social, and Dinner (followed by a few games of Ping Pong).
