Volunteer Julia – First Week in El Paso – August 2024
Upon arriving at St. Francis Xavier Church in El Paso, I was warmly welcomed by the Assumptionist team for dinner. Lenny, a former missionary, gave me a tour of El Paso, pointing out essential locations such as bus stops, the airport, credit unions, and various local shelters. I couldn’t help but think, ‘Wow, this place is so different from anywhere I’ve been before.’ I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness about this next chapter in my life. On my second day, the morning had quickly intensified with the arrival of migrants from various Latin American countries. I helped with their registration and assisted in the kitchen throughout the day.
During my first few days, I focused on learning and understanding the daily operations of the shelter. I was impressed by the well-coordinated systems designed to make the migrants’ transition as smooth as possible. It is apparent how the shelter acts as a critical lifeline for families seeking refuge and safety after extensive journeys. Every detail had been carefully and thoroughly evaluated to determine best solutions for their stay. Features such as clearly marked areas, posted rules, and established routines helped the migrants adapt to the new environment.
I also quickly recognized the network of genuinely passionate volunteers, all contributing their creativity, dedication, and personality to the team. Every volunteer has been deeply moved by the stories and the migrant crisis happening at the border. It is inspiring to witness a community of individuals who selflessly devote themselves to the mission and those they are helping.
By the end of my first few days, I had noticed a shift in the migrant’s demeanor. They began to open up and show their true personalities. The children became more comfortable to play and interact with one another. It is remarkable to recognize these individuals not merely as numbers assigned by border patrol, but as people with intrinsic dignity from God. Working at the shelter allows me to be a vessel of God’s love and inspires me to imitate the heart of Jesus in my daily work. As I continue my time in El Paso, I eagerly anticipate the new challenges the Lord will present both in my mission work, but also my personal faith journey.
