Kambali High School: A Place of Opportunity and Growth in Butembo

Kambali High School in Butembo

At the heart of Butembo, in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, stands Kambali Secondary School—a vibrant community where education is more than just learning; it’s an opportunity to change lives and shape a brighter future. As the Assumptionists who run this school, we, Radek and Lynne, take great pride in being part of this incredible mission. Kambali is a place where young people from all walks of life come together, united by the shared goal of personal growth and community service.

Education for All

Kambali is home to over 1,700 students, each with their own dreams and ambitions. Many of our students continue their academic journey at the University of Assumption in Congo (UAC), which we were proud to help establish just a few years ago. The connection between Kambali and UAC provides a clear path from secondary school to higher education, offering our students even more opportunities to develop their skills and make a meaningful impact on their communities.

One of the things we’re most passionate about is ensuring that every student, regardless of their financial situation, has the chance to receive an education. We strongly believe that education should be a right, not a privilege. That’s why we’ve created a flexible model that allows students from low-income families to attend Kambali without the burden of full upfront tuition payments. Those who face financial challenges can pay back the cost over time, once they’ve graduated and secured employment. It’s our way of making sure that every student who comes to Kambali has the opportunity to grow and learn, no matter their background.

More Than Just Learning

While academic excellence is at the core of Kambali’s mission, we understand that learning isn’t just about what happens in the classroom. We’ve built a school environment that values holistic development, where students can engage in sports like soccer and karate, as well as participate in community events that help them build leadership, teamwork, and discipline. These experiences are vital in preparing our students for the challenges they’ll face in the real world.

When visitors come to Kambali, they often remark on the strong sense of community that fills the air. The school isn’t just a place to study—it’s a space where students, alumni, and teachers all come together to support one another, share experiences, and work toward a common purpose. Whether on the sports field or in the classroom, the energy and enthusiasm at Kambali are palpable. It’s a place where people feel connected, valued, and empowered to succeed.

A Welcoming Spirit

During a recent visit from the organization Kids in the Congo, we had the privilege of hosting a team who witnessed firsthand the warm, welcoming spirit that makes Kambali truly special. Despite the heavy rain, our doors were always open, and we were thrilled to show the team what makes Kambali so unique. Students, teachers, and alumni alike eagerly shared their stories and experiences, and it was a beautiful reminder that Kambali is not just about academics—it’s about creating a space where everyone feels supported, heard, and valued.

Looking Toward the Future

At Kambali, our focus is not only on academic achievement but on developing well-rounded young people who are ready to take on the world. The education we provide is just the foundation; it’s the tools and values we instill in our students that will help them navigate the challenges of life. Through our commitment to inclusivity, community, and holistic growth, we are shaping the leaders of tomorrow—young people who will go on to make a difference in Butembo, across the DRC, and beyond.

We are deeply grateful to the students, faculty, and supporters who make Kambali the vibrant, thriving community that it is. Together, we’re building more than just a school. We’re creating a place where every individual can reach their fullest potential, and in doing so, help build a brighter future for all.
