A Mission Rooted in Faith and Service
More than a century ago, the Augustinians of the Assumption began their missionary presence in Africa. In September 1921, the Assumptionists arrived in Congo with a commitment that reached beyond evangelization. Like many missionary communities of the time, they understood that proclaiming the Gospel also meant accompanying people in the realities of daily life – through education, health care, pastoral ministry, and service to the wider community.
The Same Spirit in Njiru, Nairobi
Today, that missionary spirit is alive in Njiru, Nairobi, where the Augustinians of the Assumption continue to serve through St. Monica Parish, the local dispensary, and Blessed Pavel Catholic School. Together, these ministries reflect a mission that cares for the whole person: spiritual life, learning, health, character, and community.
Forming Young People for Leadership and Service
During her time with the Assumptionist community in Kenya, Dr. Magalie Torres-Rowe was invited to speak with students from across the school at Blessed Pavel Catholic School. Her presentation focused on identity, leadership, values, education, responsibility, compassion, and service. She encouraged students to recognize their gifts, develop their dreams, and understand that education is not only about gaining knowledge, but also about using what we learn to strengthen our communities and serve others.

Blessed Pavel Catholic School
Blessed Pavel Catholic School is a primary and junior secondary school located in Njiru, Nairobi, along Kangundo Road inside the St. Monica Catholic Church compound. The school offers values-based education within Kenya’s Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), helping students grow academically while developing character, responsibility, and a spirit of service.
The Mission Continues
The history of the Assumptionist mission reminds us that ministry is ultimately carried forward by people: priests and religious, teachers, health workers, volunteers, families, and young people who choose to place their gifts at the service of others. From Congo in 1921 to Njiru today, the mission continues – rooted in faith and made visible through education, care, compassion, and hope.
