For the past few weeks, the focus of migrant ministry as Assumptionists has shifted across the border to Juarez, Mexico, as we have sought to offer assistance at both the city’s Cathedral and Casa del Migrante, the largest migrant shelter in the city. At its height, upwards of a thousand migrants were welcomed and cared for, but with the policy changes, numbers are more modest now, hovering around seventy.
Our assistance amounts to sharing our own donations which we have and continue to receive and helping the staff to better organize their own vast store of donations, which include clothing, hygiene products, and food. Yes, there is a lot to do, but there has also been time to meet with guests of CdM, many of whom are stranded as a result of changes at the US-Mexico border. Despite these challenging circumstances, we have shared together, laughed together, and even prayed together. Their inner resilience and their deep faith in the goodness of life are lessons we learn every day we come to Juarez. God’s Kingdom is still present and it is still growing.
