A missionary journey of presence, listening, and hope
A Mission Rooted in a Longstanding Presence
The Assumptionists have served the people of Nairobi for many years through education, pastoral ministry, and a commitment to accompanying young people and families. During a recent missionary trip to Kenya, a group of Assumptionist volunteers from the United States, including Dr. Magalie Torres Rowe, entered into that ongoing mission by visiting communities, listening to local needs, and spending time with those whose lives are touched by Assumptionist ministries and partners.
Listening to Adolescent Mothers
One of the most moving encounters of the trip was with adolescent mothers supported by Younib Mental Health Services in East Nairobi. The volunteers sat with these young women, listened to their experiences, and shared moments of encouragement and compassion. For many young mothers, simply being heard without judgment can be an important first step toward healing, confidence, and hope.
Mental Health Care for Young People
Younib works with teenagers across 35 secondary schools in East Nairobi, many of which do not have access to school counselors. The organization supports young people facing anxiety, depression, panic attacks, and other emotional challenges, creating a safe space where they can speak openly and receive care, guidance, and accompaniment.
A Visit with Girls from an Orphanage
The missionary group also met girls from an orphanage who benefit from Younib’s services. Their smiles and warmth left a lasting impression on the volunteers. Behind each smile is a young person with her own story, her own struggles, and her own dreams. These encounters reflected the heart of the Assumptionist mission: being present, listening with compassion, and reminding each person that she is seen and valued.
Help Us Continue This Work
The needs are real, and so is the difference that compassionate support can make. Donations help organizations such as Younib continue reaching students, adolescent mothers, and vulnerable young girls who may otherwise face emotional struggles alone.
Please consider supporting this important cause. You can make a donation through our website, or call us directly to give. Every contribution helps extend care, guidance, and hope to young people who need someone to walk beside them.
Through the generosity of donors, the dedication of local partners, and the presence of Assumptionist volunteers, this missionary journey becomes part of a much larger story of faith, service, and accompaniment in Nairobi.
