A Story That Began with One Response
During the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Assumptionist presence in the Philippines at Adveniat House in Quezon City, Fr. Alex Castro reflected on how this mission did not begin with a plan or institutional strategy. Instead, it began with a simple but courageous response to God’s call. In his homily, Fr. Alex recalled the Gospel moment when the first disciples left their nets and followed Him. In a similar way, the beginnings of the Assumptionist presence in the Philippines started with the desire of a young Filipino, Ricky Montañez Cañete, who reached out to learn more about the Assumptionist life. What seemed like a small step became the seed of a lasting mission.
A Mission That Took Root in Faith
Fr. Alex emphasized that the foundation of the Assumptionist community in the Philippines was not the result of expansion planning, but the fruit of listening. The openness of the Congregation and the generosity of those who responded made it possible for the mission to take shape. From its beginnings at Adveniat House, the community gradually became a place of formation, accompaniment, and service. Over the years, relationships were built with local communities, young people were welcomed and guided, and the Assumptionist spirit quietly found its place in the life of the Church in the Philippines.
Continuing the Journey Today
Reflecting on these twenty years, Fr. Alex invited the community to see this anniversary not simply as a celebration of the past, but as a renewal of the original call that began the mission. What started with one response continues today through the commitment of those who live and share the Assumptionist charism. After two decades, the presence of the Assumptionists in the Philippines stands as a reminder that missions often begin in simple ways. When a call is heard and answered with faith, it can grow into something that serves many.
